Few knew about the castle hidden inside the island.

And that’s the way she liked it. Sure it was a little damp and soggy. But that just added to its charm. It was hers. She knew every nook and cranny, yet still she stalked its halls. Like a stranger exploring an empty prison. Like a thief of the queens jewels. Like a princess hunted…

“Come your highness! Quickly! This way!”
She follows her imaginary savior, a simple squire with curly brown hair. They wind their way carefully through the corridors, avoiding the Black Knights.

*BZZZ BZZZ*
She startles and nearly slips down a set of five shallow steps, then sighs. It’s just the alarm on her iPhone. She turns regretfully, thoughts lingering on the very handsome squire, taking the first right to ascend a flight of stairs.

She surfaces near a dock where a young man sits reading in a motorboat. He looks up, “did you have fun?”

“Of course!” She said enthusiastically, “but now it’s time to go home.”

He reaches out a hand to help her in and she ruffles his curls with her free hand. Together they untie and launch the boat. She keeps glancing at him, thinking how very much he looks like her squire.

A budding romance, mayhap? I bet many people would daydream, walking through a big empty castle.

    • Yes! She didn’t realize that she liked him until after her daydream. He, of course, has liked her for a long time. I did take some inspiration from my youth. We had some fallen trees in our “woods” and I roamed over them easily a hundred times a day. And every day was a different story! Thank you for commenting!
